SECTION 1.

Sir,

Foreign Office to Messrs. D. Sassoon and Co.

Foreign Office, October 21, 1909.

I AM directed by Secretary Sir E. Grey to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 15th instant in regard to the opium regulations put into force by the Viceroy of Nanking,

In reply, I am to inform you that, as stated in the letter from this Department of the 12th instant, His Majesty's Minister at Peking had sent instructions to His Majesty's Consul at Nanking in regard to the complaint made by your firm. Sir E. Grey has not as yet heard the result of the representations addressed to the Viceroy by Mr. Goffe in consequence of these instructions. As soon, however, as a report is received a further communication will be addressed to you.

I am to add that a copy of your letter under reply will be forwarded to Sir J. Jordan for any observations he may have to offer.

I am, &c.
